Ukrainian Soldier Draws Horrors Of War, Says It Helps To Not ‘Go Mad’

In the midst of the ongoing war in Ukraine, one soldier has found a unique way to cope with the horrors he witnesses on a daily basis. Andriy, a 48-year-old drone pilot, has turned to drawing to help him process the traumatic events he experiences while flying reconnaissance missions in eastern Ukraine.

Andriy’s sketches depict the brutal reality of war, capturing the agony of soldiers and civilians caught in the crossfire. One drawing in particular stands out – a wounded Ukrainian soldier lying among ruins, surrounded by corpses and reaching out for help. The haunting image serves as a reminder of the human cost of conflict.

What makes Andriy’s story even more poignant is the revelation that the agonizing soldier in his drawing was actually a close friend, known by the call-sign Donbas. The two men had fought together in the same brigade, sharing the hardships and dangers of war.

Despite the heartbreak of losing his friend, Andriy remains committed to his duty as a soldier. He sees his role as vital in protecting Ukraine from external threats and preserving its sovereignty.

Through his art, Andriy not only honors the memory of those who have fallen but also finds a way to process his own grief and trauma. In a war-torn country where every day brings new challenges and losses, his drawings serve as a powerful testament to the resilience and courage of the Ukrainian people.
