UMG and TikTok Settle Royalty Dispute, Leading to Return of BTS, BLACKPINK, and Other Artists After 3-Month Hiatus

Reading Time: < 1 minute

After three months of intense negotiations, Universal Music Group and TikTok have finally resolved their royalty dispute with a new agreement in place. This means that UMG’s artists, including popular K-pop acts like BTS, BLACKPINK, SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, TWICE, and others, will now be returning to TikTok.

The tension between the two entities began in late January of this year when discussions hit a roadblock over fair compensation for music usage, concerns about AI-generated content, and artist safety issues. As a result, UMG’s music catalogue was removed from TikTok, affecting a wide range of artists across different genres.

However, with the new agreement now in effect, songs from numerous artists represented by Universal Music Group will gradually reappear on TikTok. This development not only provides artists with better compensation and promotional avenues but also allows fans to reconnect with their favorite tracks on the popular platform once again.

In an open statement, both Universal Music Group and TikTok expressed their excitement about the renewed collaboration, emphasizing their commitment to fostering value, discovery, and promotion for UMG’s diverse array of talent. This resolution marks a significant milestone in the music industry and brings relief to both artists and fans who have been eagerly awaiting the return of UMG’s music to TikTok.
