UN chief condemns Iran’s attack on Israel, calls for de-escalation and peace efforts

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned Iran’s attack on Israel, calling for de-escalation and defusing tensions in the region. The U.S. has also warned that it will work to hold Tehran accountable at the United Nations.

Iran launched a direct attack on Israeli territory by deploying explosive drones and firing missiles, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two nations. The attack was reportedly in response to a suspected Israeli strike on Iran’s embassy compound in Syria, which resulted in the deaths of top Revolutionary Guards commanders.

Guterres addressed the U.N. Security Council, emphasizing that the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state is prohibited under international law. He urged member states to prevent further escalation and work towards peace in the region.

Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Robert Wood called on the Security Council to condemn Iran’s actions and stated that the U.S. would explore additional measures to hold Iran accountable. He emphasized that Iran would be held responsible for any further actions against the U.S. or Israel.

The situation in the Middle East is becoming increasingly volatile, with the risk of a full-scale conflict looming. Guterres called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional release of hostages, highlighting the urgent need for peace and stability in the region.
