A United Nations expert has called on Israel to investigate multiple allegations of cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of Palestinian detainees following the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas. The UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Alice Jill Edwards, stated that she had received reports of detainees being beaten, blindfolded, handcuffed for long periods, deprived of sleep, threatened with violence, insulted, and exposed to humiliating acts.

Despite these allegations, there has been no immediate reaction from the Israeli government or military. The military has maintained that they operate within Israeli and international law, providing detainees with essential needs such as food, water, medication, and proper clothing.

Edwards expressed concern over the lack of accountability and transparency in handling these reports, creating an environment for further abusive treatment of Palestinians. She emphasized the importance of investigating all complaints promptly, impartially, and transparently, holding those responsible accountable, and providing victims with reparation and compensation.

The Israeli military operation in Gaza was triggered by the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas militants, resulting in a significant number of casualties and a humanitarian crisis. The ongoing conflict has displaced thousands of Palestinians and caused a grave humanitarian crisis in the region.

As the situation continues to escalate, the international community is closely monitoring the developments and urging for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The need for accountability and respect for human rights remains paramount in addressing the mistreatment of Palestinian detainees.
