UN official declares famine in northern Gaza as ‘full-blown’ | Global News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The dire situation in northern Gaza has reached a critical point, with a top UN official declaring the region to be in full-blown famine. Cindy McCain, the American director of the UN World Food Programme, made the alarming statement after more than six months of war between Israel and Hamas, coupled with severe restrictions on food deliveries to the Palestinian territory.

McCain emphasized the urgent need for a cease-fire and a significant increase in aid flow through both land and sea routes to address the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where 2.3 million people are struggling to survive.

While Israel has indicated a willingness to allow more humanitarian aid through land crossings, the situation remains dire in northern Gaza, where famine has taken hold. The US Agency for International Development is working on establishing a sea route to bring in essential food supplies, including treatment for hundreds of thousands of starving children.

The Biden administration has allocated $320 million for the Gaza pier project, aiming to provide much-needed aid to the region. However, challenges remain, including security concerns and logistical issues in delivering aid effectively.

The international community is rallying to address the crisis in Gaza, with efforts underway to ramp up aid delivery and provide critical support to those in need. The situation is dire, with children under 5 particularly vulnerable to the devastating effects of malnutrition. Immediate action is needed to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of civilians in Gaza.
