The year-long war in Sudan between rival generals has reached a critical point, with the United Nations calling it a “crisis of epic proportions.” The conflict, which began in mid-April 2023, has resulted in over 14,000 deaths, tens of thousands wounded, and millions forced to flee their homes.

The U.N. political chief, Rosemary DiCarlo, addressed the Security Council, highlighting the devastating impact of the war, including looming famine and the urgent need for life-saving assistance for 25 million people. She condemned the illegal and immoral support from foreign backers that has prolonged the conflict.

Mohamed Ibn Chambas, chair of the African Union panel on Sudan, emphasized the detrimental role of external interference in the peace negotiations. He pointed out that the supply of weapons and other support from foreign entities has been a major factor in prolonging the war.

The conflict has escalated to include brutal attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on ethnic African civilians in Darfur, with reports of villages being burned and thousands displaced. The RSF, led by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, has reportedly received support from Russia’s Wagner mercenary group and other sources.

The situation in Sudan is dire, with the potential for further violence and humanitarian crises. Efforts are being made to convene a comprehensive mediation and peacemaking strategy, as well as to prepare for a post-war transition to democratic governance.

The war in Sudan has not only devastated the country but also threatens to set it back several decades. It will require significant international support and cooperation to rebuild and restore stability to the region.
