UN Security Council to convene regarding fatal Rafah attack

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The ongoing conflict in Jerusalem’s Old City continues to escalate, with the recent eviction of the Ghaith-Sub Laban family sparking outrage and condemnation from UN experts. The elderly couple, Nora Ghaith and Mustafa Sub Laban, were forcibly removed from their home, which had been in Ghaith’s family for generations.

The eviction was carried out under a controversial law that allows Jews to claim properties that belonged to their families before they were evicted in 1948, displacing Palestinian refugees in the process. This legislation has been criticized for its double standard, as it does not allow Palestinians to reclaim properties they lost in West Jerusalem in 1948.

The situation in East Jerusalem has only worsened since the eviction, with plans for eight new settlements fast-tracked and a dramatic increase in the demolition of Palestinian homes. Israeli human rights organizations have raised concerns about the exploitation of the conflict in Gaza to push forward settlement plans and displace more Palestinians from their homes.

The international community has been called upon to take action and hold Israel accountable for its actions in East Jerusalem. The need for a renewed peace process and dialogue towards a two-state solution has been emphasized, with Jerusalem being a central point of contention in the conflict.

As the situation in Jerusalem continues to deteriorate, the urgency for intervention and a commitment to international law and human rights has never been greater. The fate of the city and its residents hangs in the balance, with the hope for a peaceful resolution seeming more elusive than ever.
