A recent research study has shed light on the impact of hostile sexism on romantic relationships, particularly among heterosexual men who believe their female partners want to control them. The study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found that men with hostile sexist views tend to underestimate their power in relationships and are more likely to act aggressively towards their partners.
According to Emily J. Cross, a post-doctoral student from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, the power dynamics in intimate relationships are complex, as both partners are dependent on each other. This mutual dependence can constrain an individual’s power, leading to difficulties for men with sexist views who fear losing power to women.
The research team studied 1,096 heterosexual men and women, including 590 couples, across four experiments. They found that men with hostile sexist views felt they had less power in their relationships and were more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior such as criticism and unpleasantness towards their partners.
Interestingly, the study also examined women with hostile sexist views and found that they had less desire for power in their relationships. Cross emphasized that aggressive behavior in relationships can have detrimental consequences, as it may lead to withdrawal, dissatisfaction, and decreased commitment from the female partner.
Overall, the study highlights the harmful effects of hostile sexism on romantic relationships and the importance of addressing these beliefs to promote healthy and respectful partnerships.
