Understanding the Effects of Excessive Antibiotic Use

In a world where antibiotics were once hailed as the miracle cure for infections, a new threat looms large on the horizon – antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Dr Alexander Flemming’s discovery of Penicillin in 1928 revolutionized medicine and saved countless lives. However, fast forward to 2050, and AMR is projected to be the leading cause of death, surpassing infections as the deadliest threat.

A recent survey by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) revealed a staggering 20% increase in AMR rates since 2017, highlighting the urgent need for action. Antibiotic misuse, from the community level to tertiary care centers, has fueled this crisis. The over-the-counter availability of antibiotics has only worsened the situation, with many people self-medicating for minor ailments.

The Kerala government’s initiative to restrict the sale of OTC antibiotics without a prescription is a step in the right direction. Education and awareness about responsible antibiotic use are crucial in combating AMR. Simple interventions like vaccinations have shown promising results in reducing antibiotic use and preventing AMR.

As a society, it is our collective responsibility to address this looming threat and safeguard the health of current and future generations. The stakes are high, with potential catastrophic consequences if we fail to act. It’s time to rethink our approach to antibiotics and work towards a sustainable solution to combat AMR before it’s too late.
