UNICEF, Nigerian Guild of Editors, and DAME Join Forces to Advance Children’s Rights in Nigeria

In a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at championing the rights and welfare of children in Nigeria, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Nigerian Guild of Editors, and the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This partnership seeks to harness the influential power of the media to advocate for and protect children’s rights across the nation.

The MOU outlines a strategic approach that includes advocacy and awareness campaigns, capacity building for journalists, shared research initiatives, recognition of impactful media contributions, and influencing policy changes to support children’s rights. The goal is to create a society that prioritizes and advances the well-being of its youngest members.

UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, emphasized the pivotal role of the media in advocating for children’s rights, stating, “By joining forces, we are setting a course to transform how children’s rights are reported and addressed in the media, ensuring every child’s rights are respected, protected, and fulfilled.”

President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Eze Anaba, highlighted the media’s ability to drive societal change, pledging to focus on impactful reporting concerning children’s rights. Trustee of DAME, Lanre Idowu, stressed the importance of recognizing excellence in journalism, particularly in areas such as child rights, education, and health.

The two-year MOU aims to enhance public advocacy and awareness of children’s rights through media campaigns and journalistic content focused on education, health, nutrition, and protection. It also includes training programs for journalists, sharing research findings, and promoting awards that align with UNICEF’s priorities. This partnership signifies a united effort to drive meaningful media engagement on issues affecting the most vulnerable in society.
