Cathy Irvine, founder of Irvine Prairie, was recently honored with the 2024 Iowa Honor Roll Award by the Iowa Division Izaak Walton League of America. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to conservation, public education, or publicity efforts in line with the League’s goals. Irvine, a former teacher, was nominated for the award by the Linn County IWL Chapter and was presented with the honor in absentia by Lisa McIntyre, vice president of the Iowa Division of IWL.

Irvine’s dedication to conservation and education was highlighted during the award presentation, with McIntyre praising Irvine’s commitment to getting children outdoors and teaching them about conservation. Despite not being able to accept the award in person, Irvine’s impact on the community was evident through her work at Irvine Prairie, where she continues to be actively involved in planting and restoration efforts.

In a statement following the award announcement, Irvine expressed her surprise and gratitude for the recognition, citing her admiration for the Izaak Walton League’s work in conservation. She emphasized the importance of taking care of the natural beauty of Iowa and the United States, a sentiment that has guided her efforts at Irvine Prairie.
