The University of Cape Town (UCT) has once again solidified its position as the best university in Africa, ranking in the top 1.3% of universities globally according to the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). The latest 2024 Global 2000 list, released on 13 May, placed UCT at 271st position out of 20,966 institutions assessed.

UCT’s Vice-Chancellor interim, Emeritus Professor Daya Reddy, expressed pride in the university’s performance, attributing it to their dedication to exceptional teaching, learning, and research with social impact. The CWUR rankings are based on indicators in education, employability, faculty, and research, with UCT excelling in quality of education and alumni employment.

Despite UCT’s overall improvement, some indicators saw a drop in rankings due to the competitive nature of university performance. The methodology used by CWUR includes factors like alumni achievements, faculty distinctions, and research output, with a focus on high-quality publications and citations.

Emeritus Professor Reddy acknowledged the collective effort of UCT’s academic staff in maintaining excellence and pushing boundaries in research and innovation. The university’s commitment to staying at the forefront of global education and research is evident in its consistent performance in the CWUR rankings.

As UCT continues to uphold its reputation as a leading institution in Africa and the world, the university community celebrates this achievement while recognizing the ongoing dedication required to maintain and improve their standing in the global academic landscape.
