University of Chicago’s tennis teams achieve rare double championship titles

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The University of Chicago men’s and women’s tennis teams made history by both winning national championships, a rare feat that has only been accomplished five times in Division III history. The women’s team, led by coach Jay Tee, secured their first title after finishing as national runners-up for two consecutive years. The joy and relief were evident on the players’ faces as they celebrated their hard-earned victory.

The following day, the men’s team rallied to win their second championship in three years, with senior Ajrun Ashokumar almost causing a mishap by throwing his racket in the air in a moment of pure elation. Despite the close call with a camera, Ashokumar expressed his disbelief and gratitude for the unforgettable moment.

Both teams credited each other for their success, with the women acknowledging the men’s unwavering support during their final match. The coaches also played a crucial role in the teams’ achievements, with Tee and Brisotti working together to guide their players to victory.

In a fitting end to their remarkable season, Rena Lin clinched the women’s individual title by defeating her teammate, Slywia Mikos, in an all-UChicago final. The camaraderie and sportsmanship displayed by the players highlighted the strong bond within the tennis program.

As the celebrations continued, coach Tee humorously remarked that the next step for the exhausted teams would be to go to bed and savor their well-deserved triumph. The University of Chicago’s historic double victory will be remembered as a testament to their dedication and teamwork on the court.
