The University of Houston and Rice University are joining forces once again to support Houston entrepreneurship with the announcement of the latest cohort of their startup and small business accelerators, RED Labs and OwlSpark. This summer, the accelerators will be hosting their ventures at the Ion, the heart of the Houston innovation corridor in Midtown.

This collaboration between the two universities aims to provide tailored support to emerging startups and small businesses, further solidifying Houston’s position as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. By bringing together founders from both institutions, the partnership creates an environment that fosters collaboration, idea-sharing, and access to valuable resources.

The 18 startup and small business teams selected for the accelerators will engage in an immersive 11-week experience at the Ion, where they will have the opportunity to work with industry leaders, investors, and mentors. The cohort represents a diverse range of sectors, reflecting the dynamic landscape of Houston’s economy.

OwlSpark and RED Labs, both founded in 2013, have a track record of supporting founders and fostering innovation at their respective universities. OwlSpark has supported 97 ventures that have raised nearly $106 million in funding, while RED Labs has been instrumental in helping students, faculty, and alumni accelerate their business ideas.

The accelerator programs will culminate in the Bayou Startup Showcase on August 1, where participants will showcase their ventures to the Greater Houston community. This dynamic alliance between the University of Houston and Rice University is not only celebrating an 11-year partnership but also recognizing the impact they have had in fostering entrepreneurship and propelling Houston to the forefront of innovation.
