University of Lynchburg Helps Afghan Women Overcome Hurdles to Fulfill Their Goals of Higher Education

After the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2022, the Taliban’s takeover led to a ban on Afghan women pursuing higher education. In response, two brave women from Afghanistan, Shukria and B*, took enormous risks to attend American colleges, with the help of English instructors Alissa Keith and Rachel Willis at the University of Lynchburg.

Keith, moved by Shukria’s essay about surviving a terrorist attack, was determined to provide her with the same educational opportunities she had taken for granted. After months of navigating financial, legal, and safety barriers, Shukria finally arrived at the University of Lynchburg to pursue her dream of becoming a brain surgeon.

With the support of Willis and various nonprofits, Shukria and B* overcame numerous hurdles, including securing tuition scholarships, room and board, legal assistance, and visa applications. Despite the challenges, both women are fully embracing their educational opportunities in the U.S., eager to learn and grow.

Keith and Willis are now working to help two more Afghan women, who are actively being sought by the Taliban. They have established a fund at the University of Lynchburg for donations to support these students in achieving their educational goals.

This effort not only provides tangible support for Afghan women but also offers a way for the community to come together and make a meaningful impact from afar. Keith hopes that by sharing these stories, more people will be inspired to help those in need, no matter where they are in the world.
