But that’s not all that’s happening in the area. North Coast residents and visitors who are interested in the plant life of the Headwaters Forest Reserve near Eureka are invited to join a free guided walk on June 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Elk River Trail. Led by Scott Estepa, an ecology technician with the BLM Arcata Field Office, the walk will cover a two-and-a-half-mile route with stops to discuss plant species. Participants can expect a moderate elevation gain and are encouraged to dress for coastal weather conditions.
The Headwaters Forest Reserve, spanning 7,472 acres, was established in 1999 after a decade-long grassroots effort to protect the last unprotected, intact, old-growth redwood forest ecosystem. The reserve is home to threatened species such as coho salmon, the northern spotted owl, and the marbled murrelet. The BLM Arcata Field Office manages the reserve in consultation with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
