Update from DVLA: UK Drivers of a Certain Age May Be Required to Take a Fitness Test

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has revealed that there are over 40 million licensed drivers in the UK, with a significant increase in elderly drivers hitting the roads. This surge has sparked discussions about the need for mandatory fitness tests for older drivers.

According to the DVLA, the proportion of people aged 70 or above holding a full driving licence has risen from 45% in 2002 to 73% in 2022. This trend highlights the growing reliance on cars as the primary mode of transportation, especially among older individuals.

John Wilmot, CEO of LeaseLoco, emphasized the importance of cars for older people, providing them with social connectivity and independence, particularly in rural areas with limited public transport options.

Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, expressed concerns about the potential risks associated with elderly drivers, noting that as individuals age, their bodies become more fragile, leading to more severe injuries in accidents. He suggested that compulsory eye tests during licence renewals could help assess drivers’ fitness to drive.

A recent survey revealed that 77% of respondents supported mandatory health and fitness checks for drivers aged 70 and over, with even older individuals showing majority support for such measures.

Currently, drivers over 70 are required to renew their licences every three years, but no mandatory health or fitness tests are mandated. The growing number of elderly drivers on the roads has raised concerns about road safety and the need for stricter regulations to ensure the well-being of all road users.
