Cease-fire talks are set to resume in Cairo on Sunday, with negotiators aiming for a six-week pause in fighting to secure the release of remaining hostages in Gaza. The talks will also focus on exchanging Palestinian prisoners in Israel and increasing aid deliveries to Gaza.

Hamas has confirmed its delegation will attend the talks following an invitation from Egypt. Meanwhile, an Israeli team led by Mossad chief David Barnea is expected to depart for Egypt on Sunday. CIA Director William J. Burns is also anticipated to participate in the negotiations.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s stance that there can be no cease-fire without the return of the hostages, blaming Hamas for the lack of progress in negotiations. Thousands of Israelis took to the streets in demonstrations against Netanyahu’s government, demanding fresh elections and the immediate release of hostages in Gaza.

Pressure is mounting on Netanyahu from both domestic and international fronts. President Biden has warned of reassessing the U.S. policy on the war in Gaza if immediate steps are not taken to address the humanitarian crisis. Additionally, Britain has announced sending a Royal Navy ship to boost aid to Gaza through an international maritime corridor.

The conflict has taken a toll on Gaza, with the World Health Organization reporting the destruction of hospitals and widespread displacement. The Gaza Health Ministry has reported over 33,000 deaths and 75,000 injuries since the war began, with a majority being women and children. The situation remains tense as negotiations resume in Cairo to secure a much-needed cease-fire and humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza.
