US expedites delivery of ammunition and critical military supplies to Ukraine | Global News

The United States has rushed to send ammunition, weapons, and other war supplies to Ukraine after President Joe Biden signed a much-delayed bill to support the country in its struggle against Russian advances. The final approval of the legislation comes after months of political wrangling, during which Ukrainian forces faced ammunition shortages and suffered setbacks on the battlefield.

“I just signed into law the national security package that was passed by the House of Representatives this weekend, and by the Senate yesterday,” Biden announced, emphasizing the importance of starting the shipments right away. The Pentagon quickly followed suit, announcing a $1 billion package for Kyiv, including air defense munitions, artillery rounds, ammunition for precision rocket launchers, anti-tank weapons, and armored vehicles.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude to President Biden, Congress, and all Americans for their support in cutting the ground under Putin’s feet and reducing threats to freedom. The United States had previously sent a $300 million aid package in March and secretly sent long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine, fulfilling a long-standing request.

The legislation signed by Biden, valued at $95 billion, aims to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia’s invasion. It also provides humanitarian assistance to Sudan, Haiti, and Gaza, with a call for Israel to ensure aid reaches Palestinians in Gaza promptly.

The United States has been a key military backer of Ukraine, committing significant security assistance since the start of Russia’s invasion. With Ukraine facing a severe shortage of arms and recruits, the aid package is crucial in supporting the country’s defense efforts.
