US Government Files Lawsuit Against Live Nation in Attempt to Dismantle Ticketmaster Ownership

US regulators have filed a lawsuit against Live Nation, accusing the entertainment giant of using illegal tactics to maintain a monopoly over the live music industry. The Department of Justice claims that Live Nation’s practices have kept out competitors, resulting in higher ticket prices and worse service for customers.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has called on the courts to break up the company, citing Live Nation’s control over more than 250 venues in the US and its ownership of Ticketmaster, which controls approximately 80% of all major entertainment ticket sales. The lawsuit, brought by the federal government’s Department of Justice and 30 states, alleges that Live Nation has used exclusive long-term deals, threats to venues that use rival ticketing firms, and other practices to maintain its dominant position in the industry.

Live Nation has denied the allegations, stating that the lawsuit reflects political pressures and a misunderstanding of antitrust law. The company argues that its market share has been shrinking and its profit margin is not indicative of monopoly power. Despite this, the Department of Justice believes that breaking up Live Nation could lead to more choice for consumers and a less frustrating ticket-buying experience for fans.

Critics of Live Nation, including fans, lawmakers, artists, and competitors, have long argued that the company wields too much influence over live entertainment events. The lawsuit comes after years of criticism and follows a high-profile incident in 2022 when Taylor Swift fans experienced website failures while trying to buy tickets for her US tour. John Breyault of the National Consumers League believes that a break-up of Live Nation could lead to a more competitive ticketing market and a better experience for fans trying to attend in-demand shows.
