U.S. Officials Confirm Death of American Citizen Missing in Syria for Seven Years
Maryam Kamalmaz, the daughter of Majd Kamalmaz, a psychotherapist from Texas who disappeared seven years ago while traveling in Syria, has received specific and highly credible intelligence from U.S. officials confirming her father’s death. During a meeting in Washington, Maryam was presented with detailed information about her father’s presumed death, with officials expressing a “high nine” level of confidence in the intelligence.
The officials informed Maryam that they believe her father died years ago, early in his captivity. Despite previous indications in 2020 that Majd had passed away from heart failure in 2017, the family held out hope until this recent meeting, where the credibility of the information was confirmed.
Maryam expressed her gratitude for the confirmation, stating, “What more do I need? That was a lot of high-level officials that we needed to confirm to us that he’s really gone. There was no way to beat around the bush.”
Majd Kamalmaz disappeared in 2017 at the age of 59 while visiting a family member in Syria. He is one of several Americans who have gone missing in the country, including journalist Austin Tice. Efforts to negotiate the release of these individuals have been challenging, with Syria denying holding Americans in captivity.
While the White House and FBI declined to comment on the recent developments, U.S. officials continue their efforts to bring home Americans like Austin Tice who remain missing in Syria. The New York Times first reported on the presumed death of Majd Kamalmaz, shedding light on the ongoing challenges faced by families of missing Americans in foreign countries.
