US intelligence report reveals China’s increasing equipment sales to Russia to support military operations in Ukraine

In a startling revelation, a recent U.S. assessment has uncovered that China has significantly increased its sales of crucial technology to Russia, which Moscow is utilizing to bolster its military capabilities in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. According to two senior Biden administration officials who disclosed the findings anonymously, China supplied around 90% of Russia’s microelectronics in 2023, enabling the production of missiles, tanks, and aircraft. Additionally, nearly 70% of Russia’s machine tool imports, valued at approximately $900 million, came from China in the last quarter of 2023.

The collaboration between Chinese and Russian entities extends to the joint production of unmanned aerial vehicles in Russia, as well as the provision of essential components for Russian tanks and armored vehicles. Furthermore, China has been supplying Russia with semiconductor imports, military optics, and engines for cruise missiles, significantly enhancing Russia’s military capabilities.

The U.S. officials highlighted the growing economic and diplomatic ties between Russia and China, with the latter emerging as a crucial partner for Moscow amidst increasing isolation on the global stage. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen issued a stern warning to Chinese officials, emphasizing the potential consequences for Chinese banks and companies that assist Russia’s military efforts.

As Secretary of State Antony Blinken prepares for talks in China, the delicate balance of power in the region remains a cause for concern.
