The United States denies involvement in strike on Iranian consulate in Syria
In a recent development, the United States has informed Iran that it was not involved in or had any prior knowledge of the strike on an Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria. The strike, which Iran has blamed on Israel, resulted in the deaths of two top Iranian commanders and five others.
Amid growing concerns about the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalating into a wider regional war, the US has made it clear that it had no role in the strike. A National Security Council spokesperson stated, “The United States had no involvement in the strike and we did not know about it ahead of time.”
The US has directly communicated this message to Iran, as reported by Axios. The State Department has also expressed concerns about the potential for further conflict in the region, stating that they are gathering more information about the incident.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, has held the US responsible for the attack and called for accountability. The Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned the Swiss chargé d’affaires in Tehran to discuss the incident, given Switzerland’s role in representing US interests in Iran.
This latest development comes in the context of ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, with the US accusing Iran of supporting proxy attacks on US and Western targets. The incident serves as a reminder of the fragile situation in the region and the potential for further escalation.
