US official responds to Elon Musk’s comment on India’s bid for permanent UNSC seat | Global News

The United States has expressed its support for reforms to the United Nations Security Council to make it more reflective of the current global landscape, following Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s comments earlier this year regarding India’s lack of a permanent seat at the UNSC.

During a press briefing, US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel acknowledged the need for reforms, stating, “We certainly support reforms to the UN institution, including the Security Council, to make it reflective of the 21st-century world that we live in.”

Elon Musk had previously criticized the absence of a permanent seat for India at the UNSC, calling it “absurd” in a social media post. He emphasized the importance of revising UN bodies and ensuring fair representation for countries like India and Africa.

In response to Musk’s remarks, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) included a pledge in its election manifesto to pursue permanent membership for India in the UNSC. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also highlighted the growing international support for India’s bid for a permanent seat, stating, “The world does not give things easily and generously; sometimes you have to take them.”

The US’s endorsement of UN reforms and India’s aspirations for a permanent seat at the UNSC indicate a shifting global perspective on the need for greater inclusivity and representation in international decision-making bodies.
