US President Joe Biden visits collapsed Baltimore bridge as cleanup continues

Reading Time: < 1 minute

President Joe Biden visited the site of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Friday to witness the ongoing efforts to clear the wreckage and reopen the vital shipping lane. The bridge collapsed last week after being hit by a cargo ship, resulting in the tragic deaths of six workers.

During his visit, Biden received a briefing from local officials, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Army Corps of Engineers on the situation and its impact on the region. He also met with the families of the victims and expressed his condolences, stating, “Your nation has your back.”

The cleanup efforts involve more than 50 salvage divers and 12 cranes working to remove sections of the bridge from the waterway. The Army Corps of Engineers aims to open a limited-access channel for vessels by the end of the month and restore normal capacity to Baltimore’s port by May 31.

The economic implications of the bridge collapse are significant, with as much as $200 million in cargo passing through Baltimore’s port daily. To mitigate the impact, major employers like Amazon, Home Depot, and Domino Sugar have committed to keeping their employees on payroll until the port reopens.

The federal government has allocated $60 million in emergency relief funds for the cleanup and reconstruction efforts. Biden has pledged that the federal government will cover the entire cost of rebuilding the bridge, but funding authorization from Congress remains uncertain.

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge has raised questions about infrastructure safety and funding, adding a political dimension as Biden navigates his reelection campaign. The cleanup and reconstruction efforts are expected to be lengthy and costly, underscoring the importance of investing in infrastructure resilience and maintenance.
