US to offer Ukraine $275 million in military assistance in response to Russian aggression | Global News

The United States is set to provide Ukraine with another round of military aid worth USD 275 million as the conflict with Russia continues to escalate. This marks the fourth installment of military assistance for Ukraine since the passing of a long-awaited foreign aid bill by Congress last month.

The aid package, which is expected to be unveiled soon, includes a variety of weaponry and munitions essential for Ukraine’s defense efforts. Items such as high mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS), anti-tank systems, tactical vehicles, small arms, and ammunition will be included in the package.

Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized the importance of maintaining a steady flow of weapons to Ukraine’s front lines to address the immediate challenges posed by Russia’s aggression. The ongoing conflict has highlighted the critical need for Ukraine to strengthen its military capabilities in the face of Russian incursions and attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Since the passage of the USD 95 billion foreign aid package, the Biden administration has prioritized expediting military assistance to Ukraine, with nearly USD 1.7 billion in weapons already announced and dispatched from Pentagon stockpiles. In addition, the US has allocated USD 6 billion through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative to facilitate longer-term contracts with the defense industry.

With this latest allocation, the total amount of military assistance provided by the US to Ukraine since the conflict began in February 2022 reaches almost USD 51 billion. This significant support underscores America’s commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities and countering Russian aggression in the region.
