US to provide Ukraine with Patriot missiles as part of aid package

In a bid to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, the United States has announced plans to provide additional Patriot missiles as part of a €5.6 billion aid package. US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin revealed the decision on Friday, stating that the missiles will be used to replenish previously supplied Patriot air defense systems.

The aid package also includes more munitions for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and additional gear to integrate Western air defense launchers, missiles, and radars into Ukraine’s existing weaponry, much of which dates back to the Soviet era.

During a virtual meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the urgent need for at least seven Patriot systems to protect Ukrainian cities. Zelenskyy stressed that these systems and missiles are crucial for saving lives amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.

US Defence Secretary Austin acknowledged the importance of providing additional Patriot systems but cautioned against viewing them as a “silver bullet” solution. He emphasized the need for a variety of systems and interceptors to address Ukraine’s defense needs effectively.

The aid package, funded through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, will support longer-term contracts with the defense industry. While the delivery of weapons may take months or even years, the US remains committed to supporting Ukraine in its efforts to repel Russian aggression.

The decision to provide additional military assistance comes as US officials describe dire battlefield conditions in Ukraine, with Russian forces making significant gains. The aid package represents the largest tranche of US assistance sent to Ukraine to date, underscoring the ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities in the face of escalating conflict.
