US warns allies about China sharing geospatial intelligence with Russia

The US is warning allies that China has significantly increased its support for Russia in its war against Ukraine, providing crucial geospatial intelligence and military equipment to aid Moscow in its efforts. According to sources familiar with the matter, China has supplied Russia with satellite imagery for military purposes, as well as microelectronics, machine tools for tanks, optics, propellants for missiles, and increased space cooperation.

Despite portraying itself as neutral, China has deepened its alliance with Russia, with trade between the two countries reaching a record $240 billion in 2023. China has become a key gateway for Moscow to access restricted technologies needed for weapons production, despite US and EU sanctions on Chinese firms enabling these transfers.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has briefed European allies on the extent of China’s support for Russia and urged them to take action against Chinese entities involved in aiding Moscow. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned of “significant consequences” for companies, including those in China, found to be supporting Russia’s war efforts.

As Ukraine faces a critical artillery shortage, Russia has been able to boost its domestic arms production and import key components through third countries. The Biden administration has previously warned Beijing against providing weapons to Russia, but there is no evidence of China doing so thus far.

The US and its allies are now looking to address their concerns with Beijing and intensify efforts to curb China’s support for Russia’s defense industry. The situation remains tense as Ukraine struggles to secure ammunition while its adversaries continue to receive support from various sources.
