USAF F-15s Come Back to Base in the Middle East Adorned with Kill Markings and Nose Art

The 494th Fighter Squadron, known for their recent heroic actions in defending Israel from Iranian drone attacks, has returned home to RAF Lakenheath, U.K. The squadron, which consists of F-15E Strike Eagles, arrived back with striking new paint jobs that tell the story of their exploits in the region.

Photos released by the Air Force showcase the F-15Es adorned with vivid nose art and markings that indicate their successful missions. One particular aircraft named “Hellcat” displayed over two dozen bomb markings, suggesting it dropped a significant amount of ordinance. Another jet named “RAWR” sported numerous missile and bomb markings, while “El Jefe” and “Mullet” also showcased their achievements with bomb and missile markings.

The squadron’s return comes after a tumultuous period in the Middle East, marked by increased violence following Hamas’s attack on Israel and subsequent military operations. In response to threats in the region, the U.S. conducted airstrikes in Iraq and Syria and assisted Israel in repelling a drone and missile attack from Iran.

In April, the 494th Fighter Squadron, along with other U.S. aircraft, successfully shot down more than 70 drones launched by Iran against Israel. The squadron’s quick response and effective coordination with allies and partners were praised by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr.

The 494th Fighter Squadron’s deployment to the region began in October, with additional F-15Es rushed to the area just before Iran’s attack in April. The squadron’s readiness and capability were highlighted by Gen. Brown, emphasizing the importance of training and preparedness in such critical situations.

Currently, the 335th Fighter Squadron from Seymour-Johnson Air Force Base is the sole F-15E squadron in the region, deployed alongside F-16s and A-10s. Recent exercises, such as the Desert Flag exercise involving A-10s and F-15Es, have showcased the multi-capable and ready teams essential for mission success.

Reflecting on his first month in command, AFCENT commander Lt. Gen. Derek C. France commended the dedication and performance of the Airmen at AFCENT, noting their exceptional level of operation beyond expectations. The return of the 494th Fighter Squadron to RAF Lakenheath signifies the successful completion of their crucial mission in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.
