USPS Chief Faces Tough Questions from Senate on Metro Atlanta Mail Delays

Metro Atlanta residents are facing frustration and delays in mail delivery, causing a ripple effect on their daily lives. Senator Jon Ossoff expressed his concerns about the impact of these delays on his constituents, highlighting the struggles they are facing with prescriptions, rent, mortgages, and business operations.

The Postal Regulatory Commission’s Chairman, Michael Kubayanda, revealed alarming issues with USPS service performance, finances, and efficiency not only in Georgia but also in Virginia and Texas. In Atlanta, on-time delivery for first-class mail was only met 36% of the time, with letters and cards arriving within a two-day window only 16% of the time in March.

With the upcoming election, the concerns about mail-in ballots are heightened due to these delays. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy attributed the ongoing issues to outdated infrastructure and chronic underfunding, leading to the need for modernization over a decade ago.

Despite the challenges, DeJoy highlighted successes such as the new Palmetto facility’s increased processing capacity. However, the delays at the facility were attributed to employee transfers and transportation issues.

Senators pushed back on DeJoy, demanding better preparations to avoid delays during facility upgrades. Ossoff questioned DeJoy’s ability to address the situation promptly, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling the core mission of the Postal Service.

DeJoy assured that improvements are underway, with service enhancements expected in about 60 days. However, senators like Gary Peters and James Lankford called for more transparency and accountability in USPS operations to ensure reliable service for all Americans.
