UTM Launches Malaysia’s First Faculty of Artificial Intelligence

In a groundbreaking move, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has established the country’s first Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (AI), aiming to empower AI technology and produce a skilled workforce. The vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, expressed confidence in the faculty’s ability to advance AI technology and compete with developed countries.

To further enhance AI development, UTM has collaborated with other academic institutions through the Malaysia AI Consortium (MAIC). This consortium aims to unify the Malaysian AI ecosystem, promote innovation, and ensure responsible AI practices.

The AI degree programme, approved by the Higher Education Committee, will kick off in October with an initial intake of 120 students. The curriculum is industry-infused, focusing on producing a quality workforce in AI and related sectors such as defence, education, and health.

Ahmad Fauzi highlighted the importance of industry-academic collaborations for industrial training opportunities and research projects. The faculty’s academic programme and research activities will remain industry-oriented to meet the current needs and trends in the AI and robotics industry.

The launch of UTM’s AI Faculty, MAIC, and AI Talent Roadmap for Malaysia 2024-2030 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s journey towards becoming a leader in AI technology. With a focus on continuous training and skill development, UTM is poised to drive AI research, education, and application in the country.
