UTM Launches Malaysia’s First Faculty of Artificial Intelligence

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has made history by becoming the first university in the country to establish its own Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, expressed confidence in the university’s ability to empower AI technology and produce a skilled workforce.

To accelerate the advancement of AI technology and ensure Malaysia’s competitiveness on a global scale, UTM has collaborated with other academic institutions to form the Malaysia AI Consortium (MAIC). This consortium aims to unify the Malaysian AI ecosystem, promote innovation, and uphold ethical AI practices.

The launch of the UTM AI Faculty was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who emphasized the importance of training AI talent with industry-relevant knowledge and skills. The curriculum is designed in collaboration with experts in the AI field and focuses on meeting the needs of local investors and industries.

The AI degree programme, approved by the Higher Education Committee, will kick off in October with an initial intake of 120 students. The programme is industry-infused, ensuring that graduates are equipped to meet the demands of various sectors applying AI technology.

UTM’s AI Faculty and MAIC are set to drive AI research, education, and application in Malaysia. The university is committed to providing continuous training opportunities for academic staff, researchers, and students to stay abreast of the latest developments in the AI field.

With the launch of the AI Talent Roadmap for Malaysia 2024-2030, UTM is poised to lead the way in shaping the future of AI in the country. The establishment of MAIC and the AI Faculty marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s journey towards becoming a hub for AI innovation and excellence.
