Vanderbilt’s Diamond appointed Chair of the NFHS Sports Medicine Committee

Dr. Alex Diamond Named Chair of NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee

In an exciting development for the world of high school sports medicine, Dr. Alex Diamond has been appointed as the new Chair of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC). Dr. Diamond takes over the position from the late Dr. Greg Elkins, who passed away on March 17, 2024.

Dr. Diamond, who previously served as a member of the NFHS SMAC from 2019-2023, will bring his wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. He is well-known for his work as the creator and director of the Tennessee Safe Stars Initiative, the first youth sports safety rating system in the country. Additionally, he serves as a consultant for the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) on athlete health and safety issues.

Mark Reeves, Executive Director of TSSAA, praised Dr. Diamond’s practical approach to ensuring the health and safety of student athletes, stating that he will bring the same perspective to his new role as NFHS SMAC Chair.

Dr. Diamond, who is the Director of the Vanderbilt Youth Sports Health Center, has an impressive background in sports medicine. He is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and has completed residency and fellowship training at top institutions. He currently serves as a Team Physician for several high schools, Vanderbilt University, and the Nashville Predators.

With over 50 publications to his name, Dr. Diamond’s research focuses on injury prevention and promoting health and safety in youth sports. His appointment as NFHS SMAC Chair is sure to have a positive impact on the world of high school sports medicine nationwide.
