Venice, Italy made history on Thursday by becoming the first city in the world to charge day tourists a fee to visit its iconic canals and attractions on peak days. The move comes as a response to over-tourism and aims to protect the city’s fragile sites from the negative impact of large crowds.
The fee, which amounts to roughly $5.37, will only be enforced on 29 of the busiest days between April 25 and July 14 as part of a trial phase. Tourists entering the city must register and obtain a QR code, with exemptions for certain groups such as overnight visitors, residents, and children under 14.
Mayor Luigi Brugnaro described the new system as an “experiment” to safeguard Venice, emphasizing the importance of managing the influx of tourists. Tourism councilor Simone Venturini acknowledged the city’s popularity but stressed the need for a more balanced approach to visitation.
Despite the positive intentions behind the fee, some residents protested the policy on Thursday, leading to clashes with riot police. Venice, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to renowned artworks and historical landmarks, drawing millions of visitors each year.
With the implementation of this fee, Venice hopes to strike a balance between preserving its cultural heritage and accommodating the millions of tourists who flock to the city each year.
