A new wave of startups in the autonomous vehicle technology sector is making waves with their off-road applications, diverging from the traditional focus on robotaxis in urban settings. Seattle-based Overland AI and New Brunswick-based Potential are leading the charge in this niche market, leveraging their unique technologies to tackle challenging off-road environments.

Overland AI, specializing in self-driving systems for military operations, recently secured up to $18.6 million from the U.S. Army’s Defense Innovation Unit to develop autonomous software for its Robotic Combat Vehicle program. The startup also raised a $10 million seed round led by Point72 Ventures to further enhance its autonomy stack.

On the other hand, Potential is focused on advanced driver assistance systems for off-road vehicles like ATVs and underground mining vehicles. The startup recently raised a $2 million CAD extension to its seed round, bringing its total funding to $8.5 million CAD. Potential’s Terrain Intelligence platform uses computer vision to help vehicles navigate complex terrains and changing surface conditions.

These startups are part of a growing trend in the autonomous vehicle industry, with more companies shifting their focus to off-road applications in sectors like agriculture, construction, and defense. Investors and industry experts are recognizing the potential of off-road autonomy, citing benefits such as increased productivity, safety, and reduced insurance costs.
