In a historic moment in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Rajasthan Royals’ leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal made cricketing history by becoming the first bowler to claim 200 wickets in the IPL. The 33-year-old achieved this remarkable feat during Rajasthan’s match against the Mumbai Indians at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
Chahal reached the milestone in his 153rd appearance in the IPL, having debuted in the league in 2013. He wasted no time in creating history, dismissing Mohammad Nabi on just the third ball of his opening over. Chahal ended the match with figures of 1 for 48 in four overs.
Notably, Chahal holds the title of the highest wicket-taker in IPL history and currently shares the top spot for most wickets in the ongoing IPL season with 13 wickets. Fellow bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel also have 13 wickets to their name.
In a cheeky congratulatory message, veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra, who is part of the Lucknow Super Giants squad, praised Chahal for his achievement and expressed his desire for a healthy competition between them.
The list of top five wicket-takers in the IPL includes three leg-spinners, with Mishra occupying the fifth position with 173 wickets. Chahal leads the list with 200 wickets, followed by Dwayne Bravo, Piyush Chawla, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Prior to Chahal, only two other bowlers had achieved the feat of 200 wickets in a T20 competition. Chahal’s impressive tally of 200 IPL wickets includes 139 wickets from his time with the Royal Challengers Bangalore and 61 wickets for the Rajasthan Royals since joining the franchise in 2022.
