Videos of Army officials assaulting police officers in Pakistan spark public outrage

Videos showing Pakistan army personnel torturing policemen in Punjab’s Bahawalnagar have sparked widespread outrage on social media. The clips depict army officers assaulting and beating up the policemen, with some officers seen pleading for mercy.

In one clip, the army men forced the cops to kneel on the ground in their uniforms. Two cops were seen begging for their lives as they were subjected to brutal treatment. Another clip showed two young cops attempting to escape from the army personnel.

According to a senior police officer, the incident stemmed from the illegal detention of three civilians by Punjab police, who were allegedly demanding money for their release. The police also raided the home of an army officer to apprehend an associate of the trio, leading to a retaliatory raid by army personnel on the Madrassa police station in Bahawalnagar.

The Punjab police released a statement claiming that the incident was taken out of context and exaggerated on social media. They clarified that the situation was resolved peacefully after a joint investigation by both institutions. Following the incident, four policemen were suspended and arrested under various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The videos have raised concerns about the relationship between the Pakistan army and Punjab police, with calls for accountability and justice for the tortured officers. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring the safety and well-being of law enforcement personnel.
