Real estate tycoon Truong My Lan was handed a shocking death sentence by a court in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in the country’s largest financial fraud case to date. The 67-year-old chair of Van Thinh Phat, a prominent real estate company, was found guilty of orchestrating a massive fraud totaling $12.5 billion, equivalent to nearly 3% of Vietnam’s 2022 GDP.

Lan was accused of illegally manipulating the Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank from 2012 to 2022, funneling funds through a network of ghost companies and bribing government officials. Her arrest in October 2022 was a significant development in Vietnam’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign, known as the Blazing Furnace, which has implicated high-ranking officials, including former President Vo Van Thuong who resigned in March.

The scale of Lan’s trial has sent shockwaves through the nation, raising concerns about the integrity of other banks and businesses in Vietnam. This has had a negative impact on the country’s economic outlook, causing unease among foreign investors looking to diversify their supply chains away from China.

The real estate sector has been particularly hard hit, with over 1,300 property firms exiting the market in 2023. Developers are resorting to discounts and incentives like gold gifts to attract buyers, while rental prices in Ho Chi Minh City have plummeted. Despite these efforts, many properties in the city center remain vacant.

Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has vowed to continue the fight against corruption for the long term, signaling a commitment to rooting out financial misconduct at all levels of Vietnamese society.
