After 30 years of dedicated service, Mary Helmick is set to retire from her role as assistant vice president for finance and director of procurement at Virginia Tech, effective Sept. 1. Helmick’s tenure has been marked by significant achievements and impactful contributions to the university’s procurement processes.

During her time at Virginia Tech, Helmick spearheaded critical procurement process improvement initiatives, ensuring efficient sourcing and delivery of goods and services. She led the university through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining uninterrupted operations amidst global supply chain disruptions. Helmick also oversaw the growth of the Supplier Opportunity Program, supporting small, women-owned, and minority-owned businesses.

Under Helmick’s leadership, Virginia Tech saw its highest spending with SWaM-certified companies in 15 years, totaling over $167 million in fiscal year 2023. Her efforts were recognized with the 2019 SWaM Innovator Award for creating a searchable SWaM business directory.

In addition to her role at Virginia Tech, Helmick served as president of the Virginia Association of University and State Procurement Professionals and was appointed to various statewide committees. She plans to spend her retirement with family and grandchildren, while also giving back to others balancing career and family responsibilities.

Helmick’s departure marks the beginning of a national search to fill her position, with Rebecca Folmar leading the search committee. Helmick’s legacy of leadership and dedication will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on Virginia Tech’s procurement operations.
