Volkswagen Delays Launch of ID.7 EV Sedan in US and Canada Due to Shifting Market Dynamics

Just one year after making a splashy debut in New York City, Volkswagen has announced a delay in bringing its ID.7 EV sedan to the US and Canada. The German automaker cited changing market dynamics, including waning EV demand and the decline of the sedan body style in America.

The ID.7, which has been on sale in Europe and China since late 2023, was originally set to make its way to North America. However, with EV sales rising only 2.6% year over year in the first quarter of 2024, compared to much higher growth rates in previous quarters, Volkswagen has decided to postpone the launch.

In addition to slowing demand for EVs, the sedan body style has been losing popularity in the US. Chevy recently canceled its Malibu sedan after 50 years to focus on SUVs, crossovers, and EVs.

Volkswagen’s pivot on the ID.7 comes as the company reevaluates its plans to launch 75 EVs over the next decade, including 25 in North America. While the goal of bringing 25 EV models to North America by 2030 remains, Volkswagen is considering a shift in its product portfolio to meet changing customer preferences.

The German automaker has also been exploring partnerships to lower costs and time to market for its EVs, particularly in China. With the EV market evolving rapidly, Volkswagen is adapting its strategy to stay competitive in the global automotive industry.
