Volunteers from the UAE assemble aid kits for flood-stricken Brazil

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In a heartwarming display of solidarity and compassion, over a hundred UAE residents came together to volunteer and pack aid kits for the flood-hit communities in Brazil. The recent record-breaking thunderstorms that hit the UAE in April served as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of extreme weather conditions, prompting these volunteers to take action.

Among the volunteers was Brazilian expatriate Rachel Caires, who brought her children and nephew to participate in the relief efforts. She saw this as an opportunity to educate them about the importance of helping others and the urgent need to address climate change. Conversations among the volunteers centered around the increasing frequency of extreme rainfall events worldwide and the need for collective action to mitigate their effects.

Alex Cale, another volunteer originally from São Paulo, shared his firsthand experience of the unprecedented floods in Rio Grande do Sul. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the signs of climate change and taking proactive measures to protect the environment. The volunteers, including Filipino expatriates Mary Cui, Liz Casimiro, and Bernalyn Grace, highlighted the real and immediate impacts of climate change in their home country, where floods have become more damaging and deadly.

The spirit of volunteerism in the UAE was praised by the Filipinas, who had previously received assistance from Dubai volunteers during a flood in their area. Now, they were eager to pay it forward by lending a helping hand to those in need. Emirati volunteer Nada Khadhar Aljasmi expressed her pride in representing the culture of helping others in need, taking time off from university to contribute to the relief efforts.

The ambassador of Brazil to the UAE, Sidney Leon Romeiro, expressed his gratitude to the volunteers and the UAE government for their support. He highlighted the swift response of the UAE government in providing emergency assistance to the affected communities in Brazil, including power generators, blankets, and mosquito nets. The solidarity and empathy shown by the UAE government and its people were deeply appreciated by Romeiro and the Brazilian expatriate community.

As the world grapples with the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters linked to climate change, the volunteer efforts in the UAE serve as a shining example of global solidarity and compassion. Through their actions, these volunteers have not only provided much-needed aid to those in need but have also raised awareness about the urgent need to address climate change and protect our planet for future generations.
