W.F. West finishes emotional year with flawless dual record in prep girls tennis

In a season filled with both sadness and triumph, the W.F. West High School girls tennis team has emerged victorious, finishing with a perfect 10-0 dual record against Evergreen Conference foes. The team’s success comes in the wake of the passing of longtime coach Jack State, who had just completed his 50th season coaching the boys team and was set to begin his 48th year coaching the girls.

Stepping into the role of head coach after State’s passing is Megan Wellander, a former player under State’s guidance. Wellander, a graduate of W.F. West and a college tennis player, has led the team to an unblemished regular season in her first year at the helm. Despite the challenges of taking over for a legend, Wellander has instilled a sense of unity and determination in her players.

Junior Lilly Hueffed, one of State’s former players, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have been coached by him and praised Wellander for her competitive spirit and dedication to honoring State’s legacy. The team’s success has been attributed to their hard work and commitment to their goals, with players like Katelyn Wood and Lilly Hueffed leading the charge in doubles matches.

As the team looks ahead to the upcoming sub-district tournament and districts, the momentum shows no signs of slowing down.
