Walmart Announces Mass Layoffs and Employee Relocations

In a surprising move, Walmart has confirmed that it will be laying off hundreds of employees and relocating others as part of a restructuring effort. The chain’s Chief People Officer, Donna Morris, sent out a memo to employees on Wednesday, stating that several hundred campus roles would be affected by the changes.

The majority of remote employees and those working at the company’s Dallas, Atlanta, and Toronto Global Tech offices will be relocated to Walmart’s headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. Others will be moved to offices in San Francisco and New York/Hoboken. Morris emphasized the importance of in-person collaboration and innovation, stating that being together physically strengthens the company’s culture and helps associates grow and develop.

This decision to bring employees to Bentonville aligns with Walmart’s plans to create a massive 350-acre home campus with various amenities. Despite ongoing construction and development, several buildings have already opened on the campus.

The layoffs come on the heels of Walmart’s strong financial performance in 2024, with a 6% increase in revenue and a 32% increase in operating income year over year. CEO Doug McMillon highlighted the company’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction in a recent earnings release.
