Millions of UK tourists heading to Spain this year are being warned of potential fines amounting to €200 if caught cycling with earphones. With summer travel plans in full swing, many vacationers are gearing up for holidays abroad, some of whom may choose to explore their destinations on two wheels.
Legal expert Lena Farnell from Cycle SOS has cautioned travelers about the strict laws in popular holiday spots like Spain and France, where wearing earphones while cycling is illegal and could result in hefty penalties. In Spain, cyclists could face a €200 fine, while in France, the penalty is €135 for the same offense.
Interestingly, Italy and Portugal have slightly different regulations, allowing cyclists to wear one earphone while riding. However, wearing both earphones in Italy could lead to a fine of around €160.
The rationale behind these laws is safety-related, as wearing earphones can compromise a cyclist’s ability to hear important road sounds like approaching vehicles or emergency sirens. By staying alert and aware of their surroundings, cyclists can reduce the risk of accidents and ensure a safer journey.
As the summer travel season heats up, it’s essential for tourists to familiarize themselves with local cycling laws and regulations to avoid any unexpected fines or penalties during their holiday adventures. Stay safe, stay informed, and enjoy your travels responsibly.
