Meskwaki Senior Sia Bear Makes History at State Track and Field Meet

Meskwaki Settlement School’s Sia Bear is set to make history once again at the Iowa High School Co-Ed State Track and Field Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Bear, a senior and Cornell College signee, will be competing in the 1A long jump event on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Bear, who is the first girls athlete from Meskwaki to qualify three times for the state meet, all in the long jump, is looking to improve on her eighth-place finish from last year. She qualified for the state meet with a top leap of 16 feet, 10.5 inches at the district meet, breaking her own school record in the process.

Despite dealing with a quad injury for most of the season, Bear’s determination and talent have shone through. Meskwaki head coach Dylan Kalinay has been impressed with Bear’s ability to push through the pain and perform at a high level.

In addition to Sia Bear, her sister Dorothy Bear will also be competing at the state meet in the open 400 and 400 hurdles events. Dorothy, a freshman, has shown great potential and will be looking to make her mark at the state level.

Meanwhile, Grundy Center and South Tama County are also gearing up for the state meet, with both teams facing challenges and setbacks but remaining optimistic about their chances. Despite the obstacles, the athletes are ready to give it their all and compete for top honors at the prestigious event.
