West Branch Warriors Secure Spot in State Final for First Time Since 1973
In a thrilling Div. II state semifinal matchup at Canal Park on Friday, the West Branch Warriors defeated Indian Creek 4-2, securing their spot in the state final for the first time since 1973. The victory was a historic moment for the team, as they now have a chance to compete for the state championship.
Junior Anthony Perry expressed his excitement, stating, “51 years is a very long time, but Coach Rick Mulinix leads us so well and we will be ready to go Sunday.” Head coach Rick Mulinix was overwhelmed with emotion, unable to quickly process the fact that his team would be playing for the state title.
The Warriors will face sixth-ranked Hamilton Badin in the state championship game on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Canal Park. Beau Alazaus, who started for West Branch in the semifinal game, delivered a stellar performance, allowing only two runs on five hits while setting the school record for wins in a season.
Despite facing challenging situations during the game, including a bases loaded scenario in the third inning, Alazaus remained composed and received strong defensive support from his teammates. The Warriors’ solid defensive play, coupled with timely hits, ultimately led to their victory over Indian Creek.
As West Branch prepares to face Hamilton Badin in the state final, Coach Mulinix remains confident in his team’s abilities. He emphasized the importance of focusing on fundamentals and executing key plays to secure the championship title. The Warriors’ journey to the state final has been a testament to their hard work and determination, and they are poised to make history on Sunday.
