Hartford Union High School student Michael Turner has been named the 2024 Wisconsin recipient of the prestigious Spirit of Sport Award. This award, presented by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin, and the National Federation of State High School Associations, recognizes individuals who embody the core mission of education-based athletics.

Turner’s journey to receiving this award is nothing short of remarkable. During a football playoff game in 2022, Turner collapsed on the field after making a tackle. He experienced a seizure that required lifesaving procedures and emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. Diagnosed with secondary impact syndrome, Turner spent weeks in the hospital, facing complications such as blood clots in his lungs and memory loss.

Despite these challenges, Turner showed incredible resilience and determination. After months of recovery and rehabilitation, he was able to return to school and support his football team in any way he could. Turner’s positive attitude and perseverance in the face of adversity have inspired those around him.

“I’m overcome to be recognized by the WIAA. If anyone else is going through something difficult in life, I want to show them that the whole world is open to you,” said Turner. His story serves as a beacon of hope and encouragement for others facing similar obstacles.

As the recipient of the Spirit of Sport Award, Turner will be honored at the 2024 WIAA Annual Meeting. His strength, courage, and unwavering spirit make him a deserving recipient of this prestigious award.
