Waterloo Community School District Seeks Public Input on Fiscal Year 2025 Budget

Waterloo Community School District is gearing up for the new fiscal year, and the public’s input is crucial in shaping the budget for 2025. The Board of Education will be holding a public hearing on Monday at 5 p.m. at the Education Service Center, located at 1516 Washington St. This is the final opportunity for community members to provide feedback before the budget goes into effect on July 1.

The proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year is set at $248.56 million, with property tax askings of $39.36 million, representing a 6.94% increase. The tax rate is expected to rise to $13.98 per $1,000 valuation, an increase of 63 cents from the current year.

In addition to budget discussions, the school board will also be considering construction bids for the pool infill projects at both high schools. Larson Construction has submitted bids of $539,000 for East High and $489,000 for West High. The projects involve filling the existing pools and providing new flooring for multipurpose rooms.

Furthermore, the board will review a quote from Hawkeye Alarm & Signal Company for the installation of new security cameras at the high schools, with a cost of $278,200 covered by a grant.

The meeting will also address the approval of four new administrative positions, including principals, assistant principals, and a dean of students at various schools within the district. Additionally, the board will discuss resolutions on firearm safety education, mental health advocacy, and participation in the Iowa Local Government Risk Pool for the upcoming school year.
