Wayzata Boys Tennis Team Clinches Second Consecutive State Championship

In a thrilling showdown at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center, the Wayzata boys tennis team secured their second consecutive Class 2A state championship title by defeating Mayo with a score of 5-2. Despite Mayo’s impressive season record and high hopes of clinching their third state title, Wayzata proved to be the stronger team on the court.

Mayo’s coach, Jeff Demaray, commended Wayzata for their exceptional performance, acknowledging their tough gameplay and skillful execution. The match showcased top-tier talent from both teams, with Mayo’s Tej Bhagra and Ian Li delivering standout performances in the singles matches.

Wayzata’s victory marked their sixth state championship in school history, a testament to their dedication to the sport and consistent coaching staff led by Winona native Jeff Prondzinski. Prondzinski attributed the team’s success to their depth and commitment to tennis, emphasizing the players’ off-season training and the unwavering support from the school and community.

Despite the loss, Mayo’s players remained optimistic about their future prospects, with junior Noah Wisniewski expressing confidence in the team’s potential for future success. With a youthful lineup and a strong foundation, Mayo looks forward to returning to the state finals and contending for the championship title in the upcoming seasons.

The intense competition and sportsmanship displayed by both teams captivated spectators and highlighted the exceptional talent in Minnesota high school tennis. As Wayzata celebrates their back-to-back state titles, Mayo looks ahead with determination and a renewed sense of purpose for their next shot at the championship.
