The Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon will be filled with the sweet sounds of the Mahomet Music Club as runners pass underneath the viaduct at Logan and Water Street this Saturday. The group, consisting of 17 musicians including guitarists, drummers, a keyboardist, and a violinist, will be stationed at the 14th mile mark to cheer on the participants.
Heath Hafner, a member of the Mahomet Music Club, expressed the group’s excitement for this annual event, noting that it’s one of the few opportunities where they can bring their entire group together. The musicians are prepared to play a variety of music genres, from classic rock to country western, to keep the runners motivated and energized.
In addition to the Mahomet Music Club, nearly 30 entertainers will be scattered along the race courses, offering music and encouragement to the participants. Entertainment coordinator Pat Mills highlighted the diverse range of acts that will be present, from bands like the PBS Band to cheer sections with up to 21 members.
Despite the marathon organizers discouraging the use of headphones during the race, many runners appreciate the support and energy provided by the local bands. Mills, who has organized the race’s entertainment since 2009, believes that music adds a lively touch to the event and can help runners push through to the finish line.
As the runners make their way through the course, they can expect to be serenaded by the PBS Band with covers of popular songs, including hits from Lady A, Marc Cohn, and Crosby, Stills and Nash. The early morning street closures and heavy race traffic will make for a memorable and musical experience for both the musicians and the participants.
